Pro Bowl ~ Mavs ~ Lone Survivor Movie Review

GO COWBOYS!!!

The Dallas Cowboys... are on vacation. Look for them at local Dallas restaurants, the beaches of Mexico and a few of them in Hawaii at the Pro Bowl, next Sunday, 6:30 PM! The Pro Bowl is a fun game for the "best" players to show off their talents! It is the NFC vs. AFC.

Cowboys Pro Bowl Roster:
~ Dez Bryant (WR)
~ Tyron Smith (OT)
~ Jason Hatcher (DT)

As for the only real football still being played... there's this big game coming up on February 2nd. THE SUPER BOWL! I have thoughts about this, but first things first... the two teams in the Super Bowl are...

DENVER BRONCOS vs SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
February 2, 2014 ~ 5:30 PM in NYC

You read that correctly... Peyton Manning (the QB for Denver) has made it to the Super Bowl! Fingers crossed that he wins and can leave the game on top! (He suffered a neck injury two years ago, so his time is limited by more than just his age!

More on this game next week!

The Cowboys Draft countdown begins!

GO MAVS!!!

Mavs record is... 24-18, ranked 3rd in the Southwest, 8.5 games behind San Antonio!

~ Defense! Defense! Killer! Our guys can score... we've proven this! Still just need Defense! Our Coach, Rick Carlisle, called our Defense "embarrassing!"

~ Good news: Devin Harris is coming back! I loved him when he played for the Mavs years ago! '04-'08! Let's hope he can help with our Defensive issues! Dirk is still scoring like a mad man, but we need more than his 21.2 pt avg to catch up to the San Antonio Spurs

~ Remember... go see a Game!! It's downtown at the AAC! Mavs Ticket Promotions

Random Info:
Lone Survivor... the book... the movie... and a must see interview with Marcus Luttrell and the Cast.

I read the book about two years ago. My two brother-in-laws recommended it to me. I am not much of a reader, something I try to put more effort into, but this book was worth reading! I've never known what it takes to become a Navy Seal, much less be one. These men make the choice to mentally overcome obstacles, to sacrifice everything, and to become one with their brothers.

The movie is great! But the book is still better! For anyone who doesn't plan on reading the book, the movie will do just fine. However; there are quite a few parts in the book that allow you to see what a miracle it is that Marcus Luttrell is still alive!

These men do jobs that no politician could ever do! Yet, they parade around, making senseless decisions, while these honorable men remain camouflaged. I am glad they made the movie. I hope more people read the book, to fill in where the movie left off and to further educate our World of Warcraft generation on what war really looks like. Our Nation hides behind entertainment. We are numb to so many things.

Every time I see something about this story and other stories like this; it reminds me that I'm not worthy of their sacrifice. We have built our entire world around convenience. We complain when we don't have everything we want at the moment we want it. And these brave men and women are constantly inconvenienced for our freedom. For us to be what? Entitled? So focused on building up our stuff, that we don't do on a smaller scale for others what they're doing for us?

My hope is that people will see this movie, read this book, or read the Bible about Jesus and God's sacrifice of His son... talk about humbling... and realize that life isn't about us. It's about God. God is love. So therefore, its about love. How well we love one another. Purposefully making our lives inconvenienced for the sake of others.

The coolest thing in this movie is how they keep asking where their other brothers are. The whole time! Not a moment goes by after falling down a cliff and they're yelling out each other's names. In the book, Mike Murphy actually comes back down from making the phone call and then he gets shot. He screams Marcus' name as he dies. That's a love that you can't buy. Deep within. Band of brothers. Powerful. And miraculous.

***Here is a review from a guy on IMDB... it explains more about how the book differs from the movie, but there's still a lot more in the book worth reading***

Great, but the book was better

"Having read Mr. Luttrell's book recently, I'd like to write a review comparing the movie to the book and note some omissions by the director (after all, a 2-hour movie based on a book that describes, in detail, the events that took place over one week is bound to omit certain events). Before I do so, however, I'd like to state that, despite not being 100% true to the book, Mr. Berg does an excellent job. Now, here are some important details omitted from the movie: 1. The death of each SEAL and some battle-scene changes.

First of all, Danny Dietz is shown getting apprehended by the Taliban (he's left behind after the other SEAL's tumble down a cliff) and dying from his wounds. In the book, Dietz gets shot in the head while Marcus is trying to drag him to safety. However, the movie does capture each of Dietz's injuries quite well (Dietz was shot eleven times according to autopsy reports, including having his fingers taken off by a 7.62 mm round).

Secondly, in the movie, Mike Murphy is able to call the base and inform his superiors of his group's situation, but he gets shot immediately after and dies. In the book, he didn't quite die at this point, as he was able to retreat back to cover (he actually died screaming Marcus' name).

Thirdly, after Axe and Marcus get separated, we don't know exactly what happens to Axe according to the book (we do know that his body was found with only one magazine left). The movie, however, shows him fighting until he runs out of ammunition.

2. Marcus' retreat and captivity.

This is where the movie really doesn't do the book justice. By that, I mean that the book was actually more dramatic and harrowing than even the movie.

You see, the movie shows Marcus stumbling along immediately after the fire-fight, finding water and then being rescued by villagers. However, in the book, Marcus actually has to drag his bloody, dehydrated body for miles before finding a water source (over the course of one day). When he finally finds it, he is indeed rescued by villagers.

Now, it's worth mentioning that the village actually protected Marcus from the Taliban for a few days. The movie shows the villagers protecting Marcus from the Taliban for about half of a day. This wasn't true. Mohammad Gulab and his family actually protected Marcus after he was discovered by the Taliban FOR DAYS. After the Taliban found Marcus, they beat him up, but the village elder (actually Gulab's father) kicked the Taliban out of his house (in which Marcus was situated) using his authority as an elder and hid Marcus in another area. There were a few times when Gulab and Marcus were almost discovered, ready to fight, but fortunately this never materialized. Ahmad Shah, the main bad guy, actually confronted Gulab face-to-face and demanded that Gulab hand over Marcus (he left Gulab with the choice of making the decision later).

Anyway, Marcus was found by Rangers on the ground and rescued.

I loved the movie; don't get me wrong. But the actual events that took place after he was given asylum by the Afghani villagers is worth mentioning."

GO MAVS!!! 27-36  (wins - losses) Dirk, Dirk, he's our man... if he can't do it... no one can!!!  Well, only 5 other guys can and have.  Dirk is now 6th on the all time list of NBA players to score 30,000 points . This is a crazy accomplishment. He's played over 1,300 games in his 19 year career with the Dallas Mavericks.  His commitment to this team and to our city has been life changing for many. He does a lot in our community through the Dirk's Heroes Foundation . Fundraising and giving grants to non-profits in our community and around the world that are making an impact in the lives of children and families in need.  Back in the day, the Mavs games were fun to watch with the " Three J's " - but we didn't win a lot, and we never thought we would make it to the playoffs consistently, much less to the NBA Finals. ( Three J's: Jimmy Jackson, Jamal Mashburn, Jason Kidd - here's a funn

Week 11: Baltimore Ravens vs. Dallas Cowboys ~ Mavs ~ Gift Guide for Black Friday

GO COWBOYS!!! 8-1 1st in the NFL (I've died and gone to Heaven) 1st in the NFC EAST Sunday, November 20th Baltimore Ravens vs. Dallas Cowboys  (home team is second) 12:00 PM CST on CBS First things first... the Cowboys are playing amazing football right now! Even sportscasters who don't like the Cowboys can't stop talking about them.  I mentioned last week that we are the most balanced team in the league. When your Offense and Defense share an even amount of time on the field, it is easier to stay fresh and productive. If you leave your D out there too long, they're bound to make mistakes. So even with our Offense being as productive as they are, they are still staying on the field long enough to keep it balanced.  The Cowboys have a total of 219 first downs this season and lead the league at Offensive time of possession, 33:39 minutes ( an NFL football game is made up of 4 quarters, 15 minutes each, a total of 60 minutes ).  Ton

POSTSEASON BASEBALL: Toronto Blue Jays vs. Texas Rangers ~ Baseball Etiquette ~ Dallas Cowboys Over-reaction Tuesday

GO RANGERS !!! ALDS PLAYOFFS - THIS THURSDAY It's official... we are playing the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS.  Dang it.  I can't stand the Blue Jays. They have trashy fans. No, literally, they throw trash on the field .  And Jose Bautista is a punk. No one needs your bat flippin' drama!  And we all remember this... Odor punching Bautista earlier this year. Watch . All the sports people are going to have a field day over this. I bet they wish they had given us the evening time slots now! Except that Toronto's TV ratings don't count, eh?  How we win... stay focused. Eliminate the drama. We beat them during the regular season. We can do it again. No hitting batters, no one getting ejected. We need our entire roster in the ALCS. We need to play Texas Ranger baseball. Period. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Games 1 and 2 are this Thursday at 3:30 PM and Friday at Noon in Arlington, TX. Games 3 and 4 are Sunday and Monday in Toronto.   No,
