Dallas Mavericks - Basketball

GO MAVS!!!

If you ever wonder why your friends who like sports are "always" watching something... it's because seasons overlap. But those of us who like sports are totally okay with it. It's those who don't have an appreciation for sports that is bothers. Perspective. :)

I briefly mentioned the Mavs in a previous post... but here's a little info on them...

The Dallas Mavericks are your basketball team (if you didn't already know this)! They play downtown Dallas (not in Arlington like your other two "Dallas" teams... doesn't even make sense... taxes) - at the American Airlines Center. The Dallas Stars also play here. (That is your hockey team) These games are fun and fairly easy to get to if you live in the downtown area.

The Mavs won the NBA Championship for the first time on June 12, 2011. We finally beat the Miami Heat! Woohoo - Party!!! Here is a video of Dirk singing "We are the Champions" - ha!

(Do not ask real Mavs fans about the Finals in 2006. Not a good year. It's like asking a Rangers fan about Nelly in Game 6 of the 2011 World Series, DO NOT DO IT... I'm getting light headed just thinking about it...)

Random news today... our GM (General Manger - not General Motors) resigned. He hasn't even been with us a full season yet. Read On. Let's hope Cuban doesn't take a page out of Jerry's book and try to be Owner and GM! No Bueno! (Jerry Jones is the Owner and GM of the Dallas Cowboys - horrible! He makes too many decisions with no accountability! Poor management!)

Well, where to start...

~ Mark Cuban - this is the Owner, Billionaire and Extrovert that bought the Mavs in 2000 from Ross Perot, Jr. He has brought the team a long way from the hat logo to the horse logo, but he's added some W's along the way too! (W's - wins) He also likes to yell and get in trouble at games. Passion that isn't contained is still passion, and he has the money to pay the fines from the NBA. (National Basketball Association) He is also the owner/whatever of Shark Tank.

~ The Big German - I'm not being racist, this is what he calls himself. Dirk Nowitzki. This is the main player for the Mavs. His number is 41. He is who anyone and everyone will know!! He has played for the Mavs almost his entire career and lead us to 12 consecutive Playoffs! He had a knee injury that kept him out of most of the 2012 season. The good news is... he's back this year and we have a younger cast supporting him.

~ The only other player you'll know or may have heard of is Vince Carter. Homedude is older than I am, but he can still ball. ("ball" - to play ball, baller, etc.) He has played most of his career in the Eastern Conference, and finally joined the West. (The Mavs are in the Western Conference.) All I know is - he may be the Benjamin Button of Basketball. He scored as many 3-pointers last year as he did in his 2000-2001 season. He is 36 now and did that when he was 23!!! I'll take it!

I'll get into the other players later... but you should know the NBA season started tonight. They play 82 games! Sorry - I'm a little late in telling you this. But don't worry - you're only missing the LA Lakers and Miami Heat. Boring teams. Horrible. I'm kidding. You will hear so much about these teams throughout the season you will want to poke your eyes out. Just shut off Sports Center and finish your breakfast. Well, that's what I do. Go Mavs!

Here are the games for the week...

And here's the Mavs full schedule if you want to start checking out games! And if you really like ice... here's the Dallas Stars schedule.

Random Info:
~ So, I will not lie to you... I am not the best at Basketball stats, etc. Baseball and Football come more naturally to me. Probably because I was an amazing slow-pitch softball player when I was 12... and I used to play flag football with our youth group kids every Sunday. I'm 5'3" - so a career in basketball wasn't in my future. But, I love watching it and will do my best to give you the heads up on games, news, etc.

Another way you can "heads up" yourself is to watch a little BBALL history. :) I love movies! Especially sports movies! Here are a few that are mandatory to watch before the basketball season really picks up...

Hoosiers!! - this movie is AMAZING!!! Fundamentals! That's what it's all about. Gene Hackman is in it! It's a little slow at times, but it's all you need to know about basketball. And the Picket Fence! Watch it.

Finding Forrester - this is a bit more eclectic for a basketball movie, but I love it!  Sean Connery is in it and is brilliant! He cusses quite a bit, so you may not want the kids in the room, but it is still worth watching!

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days - ha - what is that doing on a sports blog?? About basketball??? Well... I figured I'd throw you a bone with a girly movie since the Kate Hudson character is totally into the New York Knicks and goes to playoff games during the movie. You're welcome. :)

GO MAVS!!! 27-36  (wins - losses) Dirk, Dirk, he's our man... if he can't do it... no one can!!!  Well, only 5 other guys can and have.  Dirk is now 6th on the all time list of NBA players to score 30,000 points . This is a crazy accomplishment. He's played over 1,300 games in his 19 year career with the Dallas Mavericks.  His commitment to this team and to our city has been life changing for many. He does a lot in our community through the Dirk's Heroes Foundation . Fundraising and giving grants to non-profits in our community and around the world that are making an impact in the lives of children and families in need.  Back in the day, the Mavs games were fun to watch with the " Three J's " - but we didn't win a lot, and we never thought we would make it to the playoffs consistently, much less to the NBA Finals. ( Three J's: Jimmy Jackson, Jamal Mashburn, Jason Kidd - here's a funn

Week 11: Baltimore Ravens vs. Dallas Cowboys ~ Mavs ~ Gift Guide for Black Friday

GO COWBOYS!!! 8-1 1st in the NFL (I've died and gone to Heaven) 1st in the NFC EAST Sunday, November 20th Baltimore Ravens vs. Dallas Cowboys  (home team is second) 12:00 PM CST on CBS First things first... the Cowboys are playing amazing football right now! Even sportscasters who don't like the Cowboys can't stop talking about them.  I mentioned last week that we are the most balanced team in the league. When your Offense and Defense share an even amount of time on the field, it is easier to stay fresh and productive. If you leave your D out there too long, they're bound to make mistakes. So even with our Offense being as productive as they are, they are still staying on the field long enough to keep it balanced.  The Cowboys have a total of 219 first downs this season and lead the league at Offensive time of possession, 33:39 minutes ( an NFL football game is made up of 4 quarters, 15 minutes each, a total of 60 minutes ).  Ton

POSTSEASON BASEBALL: Toronto Blue Jays vs. Texas Rangers ~ Baseball Etiquette ~ Dallas Cowboys Over-reaction Tuesday

GO RANGERS !!! ALDS PLAYOFFS - THIS THURSDAY It's official... we are playing the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS.  Dang it.  I can't stand the Blue Jays. They have trashy fans. No, literally, they throw trash on the field .  And Jose Bautista is a punk. No one needs your bat flippin' drama!  And we all remember this... Odor punching Bautista earlier this year. Watch . All the sports people are going to have a field day over this. I bet they wish they had given us the evening time slots now! Except that Toronto's TV ratings don't count, eh?  How we win... stay focused. Eliminate the drama. We beat them during the regular season. We can do it again. No hitting batters, no one getting ejected. We need our entire roster in the ALCS. We need to play Texas Ranger baseball. Period. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Games 1 and 2 are this Thursday at 3:30 PM and Friday at Noon in Arlington, TX. Games 3 and 4 are Sunday and Monday in Toronto.   No,
