GO COWBOYS!!! 11-1
1st in the NFC (conference)
1st in the NFC EAST (division)
Sunday, December 11
7:30 PM CST on NBC
The Cowboys pulled out a nice win over the Minnesota Vikings last week on Thursday night. 17-15, on the road. We are UNDEFEATED on the road.
If you thought they looked horrible, they were tired. 3 games in 12 days.
I'm not making the "they're a professional athlete, the need to suck it up" excuse - because they do get pretty banged up in these games. Recovery for anyone is real. Especially these guys in their 30's.
FUN FACTS:
~ The Cowboys are the ONLY team in the NFL with an 11 game win streak. The two teams that have 4 game win streaks are the Detroit Lions and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
~ The Cowboys are one of two teams who are undefeated on the road. Can you guess the other team? (hint: their QB missed the first 4 games of the season)
~ The only loss we have this season is to the New York Giants. They are in our Conference, NFC, and our Division, NFC East. This week is revenge to our lone loss.
~ This game on Sunday was originally scheduled for noon. But TV networks want to make more money, and the Cowboys vs. Giants will do just that. So they moved us into the SNF (Sunday Night Football) slot. I guess Carrie Underwood had to do a quick remake of her opening song. Can her dress be two inches longer? (I love her and her music. It's just a suggestion). #SNF
~ The Dallas Cowboys have already clinched a Playoff spot. We are still playing for home field advantage and the bye week in round one. (I don't really want the bye week. I'll add stats to support my thoughts later). If we beat the New York Giants, in the Meadowlands, we will clinch the NFC East title. Seal the deal. Done and done. On to the next...
NEW YORK GIANTS
They have Eli Manning as their QB (quarterback). Odell Beckham Jr. as their star WR (wide receiver), and one act play, dude is dramatic. Rashad Jennings is the RB (running back) they've been forced to roll with all year, but they just activated Shane Vereen this week. He hasn't been active since week 3, he had a tricep tear. Um, painful. But if he's healthy, he has the potential to be a threat with a Jennings/Vereen tag team effort.
The NY Giants offense has the ability to put up a lot of points. They do not have the Offensive line that the Cowboys do, but they are quick and Eli knows how to throw the deep ball. Something Prescott is still getting comfortable with in his NFL rookie season (the Dallas Cowboys QB).
Currently, the Giants are ranked 16th in passing yards, and 31st in rushing. Dallas' D is actually better vs. the run than the pass, but even with Vereen back, we're not too worried.
DALLAS COWBOYS
We're going to the Playoffs! We're going to the Playoffs!
Sorry, I'm just excited!! Even though tickets to the Super Bowl are currently at $7,800 and the odds of me ever attending one are slim to none. I just think it's awesome that we're good enough to make it into the playoffs and we have such a strong team! And two of the best QB's in the league!
Sunday's game is emotional for Dallas...
1. This is a division rival. We do not like the Giants. They do not like us. We do not like the Philadelphia Eagles or the Washington Redskins either. We play each of these teams twice a year, every year. You learn to not like them, but you can still respect one another.
2. Our first game of the season was our ONLY loss. 20-19. Giants came to Dallas and won in the final minutes. We're not okay with this. Our only loss could have easily been a victory, but, everything happens for a reason. Maybe we needed to start out the season humble? They seem to appreciate where they've come as a team, and add on the humility and support from Romo, their passion to win is getting stronger and stronger.
3. It's cold in Jersey. Yes, they play in New Jersey. Have you seen the land availability in the North East? There isn't a plethora of grass around to build stadiums, so these guys share with the New York Jets. I'd hate to be their scheduler. All this to say, the game is played outside... temps expected to be 35 degrees. Talk about emotion. Snot dripping out of your nose, deciding to wear sleeves or no sleeves and look tough, every tackle you make something goes numb... some real stuff! Best of luck fellas! I love watching cold football games, even cold baseball games, but I'm glad I'm not down there playing in them!
Defense... we are still busted up in our Secondary. These are the guys who chase down the Wide Receivers and try to keep them from catching the ball. Here is our injury report. S = Safety. CB = Corner Back. Even with Claiborne, Wilcox and possibly Scandrick out... Byron Jones, Barry Church and Brandon Carr should be able to hold their own vs. the NYG Offense. It won't be easy. They will be out of breath. But it's a good thing they have chicken broth on the sidelines for these dudes to stay warm and ready to run!
Offense... Dak Prescott is still going strong. He made a few mistakes in the Vikings game, but like I said earlier, he looked tired, not as prepared and that is when most people make mistakes, even in life!
Can you guess who the top receiver is on the team right now?
Shaggy Rogers. Just kidding... Cole Beasley.
Not Dez Bryant. Not Terrance Williams. Not Jason Witten. Cole Beasley.
He has been targeted 77 times and has 60 receptions, for 670 yards and he got 301 of those yards AFTER he caught the ball. He's stolen Witten's spot as the go to guy to get the first down and yards after the catch.
The funny part is, Dez Bryant has almost the same amount of yards, 634. However, he has been targeted 72 times and only has 37 catches. 118 of his yards came after he caught the ball. Basically, he only catches the deep passes, down the sideline, and falls out of bounds. Or, the ball hits his hands and he doesn't come up with it. Either way, he hasn't complained as much this season as in the past about not getting the ball. Dak is throwing it his way. So we'll take it! And it is good that the New York Giants defense, and all defenses, still have to use two of their defenders to double cover him... just in case he makes that 56 yard catch.
And, of course, we have Ezekiel Elliott. This guy has rushed for 1285 yards on 263 carries for 12 TD's (touchdowns). This is our Dallas Cowboys running back. The guy we've waited for. I am tempted to buy an Elliott t-shirt, even though I don't like getting too tied to a player. But let's hope he's around for a while!!
If our Defense can hold Eli and Beckham, and Sterling Shepard, their other top WR, we should be able to own the clock with our Offense.
Oh and Special Teams. Lucky Whitehead, our #1 punt returner, didn't make the trip to NY. No specific reason was given, but now we have to figure out who is return the ball. Beasley? Lance Dunbar (UNT alumni)? Or possibly Dez? We will see.
Can the Dallas Cowboys beat the New York Giants?
Yes.
Vegas may have favored them by 4 points. But they just want people's money.
Dallas will win by more than 4 points. In the cold. On the road. Against a Division Rival.

GO MAVS!!! 5-18 (wins - losses)
The Dallas Mavericks are 2nd to last in the NBA, out of 30 teams.
The Dallas Mavericks are 2nd to last in the NBA, out of 30 teams.
Painful.
I know there were bad years when I was growing up, but not sure it was this bad.
We are 1-11 on the road. Not a good stat for a team that has 7 of their next 11 games on the road. It is going to be a rough December. And a rough season.
At this point, it's not all lost, but we will start thinking about getting draft picks next year.
I'm not trying to be dramatic, but Harrison Barnes can't win games for us all on his own. He has 20.6 PPG (points per game), but our next top scorer only has 16.3. J. J. Barea. Dirk has only played 5 games this season, averaging 12.2 games.
What are the odds that Dirk and Romo would be out of the line-up this much for the Cowboys and Mavs in the same year. No one would have predicted it, but we're living it.
And how different the outcomes for the Cowboys vs. the Mavs this season. But I'll take it. 21 year drought for The Boys is long enough. The Mavs definitely need to re-build, and a top draft pick may be just the thing we need.

Two words...
Greenberg Turkey.
I know it is a family tradition that Grandma or some lucky family member has to slave in the kitchen all day on Thanksgiving and Christmas to make this wonderful turkey.
There's the stress of buying the turkey.
The stress of looking at a dead turkey and figuring out what parts are what. Eww.
The stress of cooking it just right, with the perfect seasoning, and trying not to dry it out. Or smoking it yourself for hours and hours.
And then the stress of cutting it with an electric knife and pulling bones apart.
What if you could bypass all of that stress and skip straight to cutting it with an electric knife. Plus, you are 100% guaranteed it will taste GREAT!
Y'all, this is the best bird you will ever eat. If you like Turkey.
It is cute that people try to make their own, and my uncle in Kerrville does a great job every Thanksgiving. However, if/when I need to help provide a turkey, I will always order Greenberg.
My addiction started when my parents received one as a gift one year. And every year since, we look forward to this bird arriving. So much so, that last year I asked for a small turkey for myself and used it for lunches for almost 3 weeks. Yummm to the yum.
They also sell these bad boys at Central Market. If you don't have one of those near you, maybe call another marketplace that sells speciality type meats. And if you do go to CM, call ahead first to make sure they're in stock.
I ran into Jordan Spieth while getting my turkey last week. We didn't have time to talk golf. Basically because I don't approach famous people. They're just people and dude was just trying to get some groceries. But, if he said anything to me, I would have wanted to talk Ryder Cup. That was greatness this year!! Or I would have just high-fived him. Good times.
Just buy this turkey and say Merry Christmas to yourself. It's worth every penny!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!! I LOVE YOU!
