March Madness ~ Mavs ~ Rangers ~ Cowboys

March Madness

What is March Maddness: The Greatest NCAA Tournament ever!! 68 College Basketball Teams play each other in a single-elimination game to advance to the next level.

Terms you may have heard during March:
~ Sweet 16 (these are the Final 16 Teams)
~ Elite 8 (these are the Final 8 Teams)
~ Final 4 (these are the Final 4 Teams, obviously)

The National Championship Game - one cool tradition for the winner is that they get to cut down the net at the end of the game! (the do this for most basketball championships, but for some reason it seems cool when it's in college)

2013 Champions... Louisville Cardinals! This was an intense run to watch. Their point guard, Kevin Ware, broke his leg in their Elite 8 game against Duke. It was one of the craziest and most emotional things I've ever seen in sports. I was watching it live and found myself crying watching everyone else react. His team managed to pull through and get to the National Championship game! They beat Michigan 82-76.

Now the main thing that everyone does during March Madness is a bracket. A what? A bracket. It is the map, if you will, of each team and who their matchup is. I will be honest and say, that out of every sports challenge I do, I am the worst at March Madness. I never seem to pick the right teams. Most people select a few standard teams: Kansas, Duke, Louisville, Florida  etc. Very few people get the "Cinderella Teams" correct: Davidson, George Mason, Gonzaga, etc. If you and your friends want to do this... here are a few places to check facts so you can make some "educated" decisions. Not that it will help! :)

Bleacher Report - March Madness
ESPN
Five Thirty Eight Predictions

There are those participants who choose the winning teams based on the colors of the jerseys. As someone who works in the fashion industry, I understand this concept and don't deny it's aesthetic appeal; however, when these participants beat those of us who dissect the probabilities of each team and their rankings, it is a tough pill to swallow. So, if you choose this method, please be nice to those of us who labor over our brackets and suffer through the wins and losses with agony. (I'm aware... it's intense, it's passion, it's sports) :)

Now, I watched the Kentucky vs Florida game yesterday. I must say, Florida looks good! Tired, but good. Kentucky made a late run for it, but it wasn't enough to win. They lost by one point. That's all it takes... one point.

Best of luck to those of you filling out a bracket! You'll have to let me know how you do! Go Davidson! (kidding - they didn't make it this year, and Curry is in the NBA

Oh - one more thing for those of us in Dallas... THE FINAL FOUR IS HERE!!!! At Jerryworld, sorry, but still, it's in Dallas!!! April 5th and 7th!! Tickets are outrageously priced, as most things are at Jerryworld, but still - if you can afford to go - you should go! I went to the Sweet 16 last year and it was awesome! Michigan beat Kansas in overtime, and it was one of the best games I've ever been to!!

GO MAVS!!!

Mavs record is... 40-27... they have dropped to the 7th spot in the Western Conference. 10 1/2 games behind San Antonio. Not fun, but we're not out of the race yet!

THE MAVS BEAT THE OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER (109-86) WOOHOOO!!! :) (Westbrook sat out, but that doesn't matter) And they're beating the Celtics as we speak!

~ Looks like our old school 6th Man, Devin Harris, is back in his groove with the Mavs! He is averaging 4 Assists per game and just 8 PPG. (An assist - when one player passes the ball and the player who catches the ball scores, PPG = Points Per Game

~ Vince Carter became the 27th player in NBA history to score 23,000 points with a 3 pointer in last nights game. Dude is old, but still has it! Vince against Ray Allen - I'm sure that would be a great 3-point match-up for next years NBA All-Star Challenge!

~ Dirk is still Dirk. Need I say more. If we get to the playoffs (which is likely) - we need this guy to be healthy and rested!

GO RANGERS!!!

What's going on in SURPRISE, Az? So, I watched part of the game Sunday... Rangers vs. White Sox. Yu Darvish was the starting pitcher. I love this guy. He seemed so relaxed and calm, but still serious with his fastball! He said in an interview that he was also working on his two-seam. I'm sure the more pitches he gets under his belt, the more deadly he will be for us late in the season. Stay healthy Yu! We need yu! :)

~ Another player that keeps coming up in conversation is Mitch Moreland. He played left field yesterday. Most of you know (or may not know) that Mitch used to play first base. He said he gained 5 pounds (of muscle) and had to work out a bit more to cover the outfield. There is still talk of him becoming the DH (designated hitter - this position does not play in the field - they just bat - random, but it is because in the National League the Pitcher bats and in the American League we let the pitcher rest and use a DH - got it?). Either way, Moreland is a solid dude and I just hope his hitting is up to par this season. I was tired of defending him last year!

Single Game Tickets are now on sale!! Remember - it's Derek Jeter's last year to play for the New York Yankees! So if you've never seen him play in a Yankee uniform - you may want to splurge for those tickets!

GO COWBOYS!!!

I love football. I love Texas. I love a lot of things about Dallas. I wish I remembered watching Tom Landry coach, but I was 6 years old when Jerry Jones fired him. I remember our three Super Bowls in the 90's, but since then... I've just watched mediocre football riding the 20 year wave of greatness.

Now lets be honest, it feels like Cowboys fans are the guy in high school, who was the star football player and is now 45 years old, and all he can talk about is winning the State Championship. Not saying that's not a cool accomplishment, but for grown adults to ride 20 year waves of one event in their life seems sad. We should be experiencing things like this all the time! Be great! Don't settle for being mediocre! I'm not expecting to win a Super Bowl every year, but at least make it to the playoffs, maybe win one or two?

~ The Dallas Cowboys released DeMarcus Ware. The guy I raved to you about all season. Yes, he was getting older and becoming slightly injury prone; however, he was still a valuable player. They also released Miles Austin. Totally fine with me. This is the dude who dated a Kardashian and has the most injury prone hamstrings in the NFL. He seems really nice, but we need to win. So that move, I approve.

More to come from the Cowboys... They're currently signing Brandon Weeden as a back-up QB. I'll explain that next week... my eye is starting to twitch just thinking about it.

Random Info:
I'm thinking of changing this sections title to Golf. But, then again, maybe not. I'll just do a small plug for the Master's that is coming up April 11-12 :) Another event on my bucket list!

What should we talk about today? The weather changing? Coat? No Coat? Trench Coat... yes! Should I still wear boots? Or go with the ballet flats? Flats it is! :) Should you start running outside? Or possibly buy a new bike?

When seasons change it is so refreshing! I just cleaned out my closet over the weekend! Out with the old, and out with the old. (trying to save, not spend... Anthropologie is so tempting) But, it is also refreshing to donate my clothes and items I've seldom worn or used to those who are in need! In Dallas there are many organizations, ministries, churches that will take your older items and put them to good use!

So while you're transitioning into a new season with the weather change, time change and maybe even schedule change... know that for some people their situations need to change! Be someone who notices people, sees them where they're at and is willing to help them in their need!

Remember... life's not about us!!

Hug someone :)

Dirk Nowitzki ~ Dallas Cowboys Free Agency ~ Texas Rangers ~ Selection Sunday ~ Loveland, CO

GO MAVS!!! 27-36  (wins - losses) Dirk, Dirk, he's our man... if he can't do it... no one can!!!  Well, only 5 other guys can and have.  Dirk is now 6th on the all time list of NBA players to score 30,000 points . This is a crazy accomplishment. He's played over 1,300 games in his 19 year career with the Dallas Mavericks.  His commitment to this team and to our city has been life changing for many. He does a lot in our community through the Dirk's Heroes Foundation . Fundraising and giving grants to non-profits in our community and around the world that are making an impact in the lives of children and families in need.  Back in the day, the Mavs games were fun to watch with the " Three J's " - but we didn't win a lot, and we never thought we would make it to the playoffs consistently, much less to the NBA Finals. ( Three J's: Jimmy Jackson, Jamal Mashburn, Jason Kidd - here's a funn...

The Masters, in all its beauty ~ Texas Rangers ~ Dallas Mavs ~ Get Outside

The Masters The ultimate Bucket List item and one of the ones that exceeded my expectations. If you play golf, have a family member who makes you watch golf or take naps to golf, you understand that The Masters is the holy grail of golf tournaments. It is the only PGA tournament that is played in the same location every year, Augusta, Georgia.  Thanks to very dear friends of mine, I had the chance to walk through the azaleas, experience the serenity of Amen Corner and watch the players skip golf balls across the water at Hole 16. If they allowed people to sleep on the grass, I would have stayed forever.  We were there for two days of practice rounds, which is fun because the players are relaxed and cut up with one another. They cancelled the Par 3 Contest, which was sad, but just being there was the most wonderful feeling ever. You can't take phones in, so I even called my parents from the phones at Augusta, just to do so. We also didn't realize you could bring in a real camer...

Week 13: Dallas Cowboys vs. Minnesota Vikings ~ NFC East ~ NFL logo quiz

GO COWBOYS!!! 10-1 1st in the NFL 1st in the NFC EAST Thursday, December 1st 7:25 PM CST on NBC We've NEVER won 10 consecutive games. Ever.  We lost our first game of the season to the New York Giants, by one point. And oddly enough, they are still the ghost we're trying to run away from and secure our playoff spot with only 5 Regular Season games left.  Here is what the NFC East looks like going into Week 13...  The Minnesota Vikings... what should we fear?  The Vikings are in the NFC North Division. They currently trail the Detroit Lions for a spot in the playoffs. They have only won 1 of their last 5 games, which makes this Thursday night, showtime game, a must win for the Vikings!  4-1 at home, The Vikings meet the Cowboys who are 5-0 on the road. Oh how I love those odds! Forever in our favor this season.  Quarterback situation. Sam Bradford is the starting QB for the Vikings. A guy they got in the o...
