Week 12: Washington Redskins vs. Dallas Cowboys ~ Staubach's Final Game vs. Redskins ~ Be Thankful

GO COWBOYS!!! 9-1
1st in the NFL (I've died and gone to Heaven)
1st in the NFC EAST
Thursday, November 24th
Washington Redskins vs. Dallas Cowboys (home team is second)
3:30 PM CST on FOX

Full of hope, I predicted last week that the Cowboys would beat the Ravens by 11 points. We won by 10.

Y'all, this is better than I could have ever hoped for... in my football fan life. We went up against the #1 Defense in the league, threw up 97 rushing yards from Zeke and 301 passing yards by Dak. What? Who are we? So much fun!

THANKSGIVING DAY RIVALRY...

Before you get all tired off Tryptophan... make sure to check out this link and read about the NFL history on Thanksgiving Day. The two most consistent teams to play are the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions.

The Washington Redskins... our NFC East Division Rival.

We have played the Redskins twice a year since 1961.

That is a long time!

The Cowboys have played on Thanksgiving Day since 1966. Our first Thanksgiving Day Game was against the Cleveland Browns. We won 26-14.

The first time we played the Washington Redskins was in 1968. We won that game 29-20.

The Cowboys have made 48 Thanksgiving Day appearances, winning 29 of them. That is a winning percentage of 60%. Not bad!

The Redskins have made 8 Thanksgiving Day appearances, winning 2 of them. That is a winning percentage of 25%.

I'm a numbers girl, and I like those odds for our Boys this week.

Redskins Offense...

Looks like the Skins have tried to find themselves a good ole QB these days!

Cousins has been on the team since 2012, but he was in the shadows of RGIII (Robert Griffin III, dude from Baylor, pre Johnny Manziel). Cousins played last year, threw up decent numbers, but this year, they have a running game to go with his 3K passing yards (K=1,000).

They gave their star RB from last year to the Cowboys, Alfred Morris. And they gained a rookie this year, Robert Kelley. He's no Ezekiel Elliott, but he and Matt Jones have combined for the same amount of yards that Elliott has. And that's actually pretty good in the NFL.

Their receiving corps has 400+ more yards than our WR's. However, yards don't always mean points.

The Cowboys Defense has held their opponents to 263 passing yards per game. The Redskins are averaging 301 passing yards per game. Looks like they won't be getting that many on Turkey Day.

Speaking of our Defense... week after week I am impressed. I know our Offense stays on the field a lot, but when we need our D to get up in the faces of the WR's and disrupt the flow of the opposing teams offense, they are on it!

With three secondary players injured, all the sudden I'm cheering and tweeting about Anthony Brown, our rookie cornerback and his basketball blocking skills. He kept his composure and played a huge role in the 4th Qtr of the game Sunday vs. Baltimore.

Cowboys Offense...

As long as Dak keeps spreading the ball to ALL of his offensive weapons, we are good. A little love for Witten, Williams

Need I say more...

Even with our 9-1 record, we are shockingly only ranked 15th in the League for Passing Yards per game, but 2nd in Rushing Yards per game, and 4th for Overall Yards per game.

Every station I turn on sports radio in Dallas, there is a debate about which rookie is better, Dak or Zeke.

My opinion is, this was the best arranged marriage ever. The Jones family did the research. They almost married Zeke and the rest of the team to a different rookie QB, did everything they could to get Carson Wentz, Jared Goff or any of the other new recruits, but it was meant to be. Dak and Zeke, leading the Cowboys to a winning season.

I will let the NFL voters battle out who deserves Rookie of the Year and/or MVP. We have football left to play and that is all I really care about. These guys care about football too. And staying healthy.

Despite the Redskins power throwing offense, and our 54 year rivalry, there is no reason that the Cowboys shouldn't win at Home, on Thanksgiving Day!

REDSKINS 17 ~ COWBOYS 31

Where to watch the game?

I hope one day to go to a Thanksgiving Game, so if you are going, in person, cheer loudly for me!

We go visit my dad's family every year. A tradition I love, because it is family. And because my youngest Uncle is a Redskins fan, which sadly has made my cousins Redskins fans, and even my cousins son. Tragic. I know. But don't worry, I wear my Jason Witten jersey down there and watch them pace back and forth as we shatter their dreams of making it to the playoffs. It will be especially sweet this year, since we're both decent teams!

Roger Staubach's Final Game vs. Skins...

As I am visiting with my parents, before driving to be with extended family for Thanksgiving, my dad recounts the Redskins vs. Cowboys game he attended with his dad and two brothers on December 16, 1979.

A game that ended up being Roger Staubach's final game to play in this magnificent rivalry, and quite possibly his greatest comeback ever.

This is an excerpt from Wikipedia about the game... my dad set the scene as, "cold, very cold..."

"The NFC East Division Championship and home field advantage on the line for both teams. This set the stage for the regular season finale against Washington; the winner would capture the NFC East title while the loser missed the playoffs. In the game, Texas Stadium fans were treated to one of Staubach's greatest comebacks. The Cowboys trailed 17-0, but then scored three touchdowns to take the lead. Led by running back John Riggins, the Redskins came back to build a 34-21 lead, but the Cowboys scored 2 touchdowns in the final five minutes — including a Staubach touchdown pass to Tony Hill with less than a minute remaining — for an amazing 35-34 victory. In the week leading up to the game, Cowboys’ defensive end Harvey Martin received a funeral wreath, supposedly sent by the Redskins. He kept it in his locker all week for motivation and after the win, he raced into Washington's locker room, opened the door and heaved it into the room, breaking up a team prayer. Adding insult to injury, the Chicago Bears defeated the St Louis Cardinals 42-6, the Redskins lost the tie breaker to the Bears for the last Wild Card spot."

And here is audio from the Dallas Cowboys Website, titled Memorable Moments, Staubach's final game vs. Skins (you have to listen to this).

My dad said that my Uncle Guy, the Redskins fan, was high-fiving everyone around them when the Skins were up in the 4th Qtr. My grandfather, his dad, left the game early to go sit in the car, with 8 minutes left, because he was cold and mad that the Cowboys were losing. My dad and his other brother, Greg, stayed and saw one of the greatest comebacks in History. Which they reveled in as my Uncle Guy sunk in defeat. This my friends is why you NEVER leave a game early. Ever.

That would have been awesome to see! And what a great family memory!

Kind of like how my oldest sister got to see Kenny Rogers perfect game

One day... just one day... I'll be there when something like this happens!

It's like hoping to get a hole-in-one every time you tee off on a par 3. You have to believe it will happen, right? SFT

Random Info:
In my last post, I gave some suggestions on surviving Black Friday and how to shop smart, if you're doing any shopping at all.

Part of me wants to boycott, just for the sake of saving money. But there are a few things I need. I use an app called Wunderlist to keep me organized and focused. It is brilliant.

But enough about material items...

Maybe it's because I'm a Christian, or because when I was sick this past weekend I watched too many Hallmark movies... but every day, not just the Holiday's, is about family. The one you are born into, the one who has adopted you, or the one whom you have fit into as though you were always meant to be there.

Time. Quality Time. What a precious gift.

That is the one thing in life that truly is priceless.
You can't earn it or define it.
It is simply precious time.

You don't have to say a word, but sometimes just having someone in the room with you makes you feel loved. It's weird, I know. But try being alone all of the time. Most people who are married and have kids think that sounds awesome. But take it from me, too much quiet is really quiet.

All that is to say is; if you have a grandparent, relative, or friend that you know gets lonely, please spend time with them. Play a game or do a puzzle with them. Let them know they matter and that they are loved.

You don't even have to bring a tangible gift, but if you're being extra nice, a candle is always a wonderful option. Or a Sweet Tea. I mean, this is Texas.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING Y'ALL!!

Dirk Nowitzki ~ Dallas Cowboys Free Agency ~ Texas Rangers ~ Selection Sunday ~ Loveland, CO

GO MAVS!!! 27-36  (wins - losses) Dirk, Dirk, he's our man... if he can't do it... no one can!!!  Well, only 5 other guys can and have.  Dirk is now 6th on the all time list of NBA players to score 30,000 points . This is a crazy accomplishment. He's played over 1,300 games in his 19 year career with the Dallas Mavericks.  His commitment to this team and to our city has been life changing for many. He does a lot in our community through the Dirk's Heroes Foundation . Fundraising and giving grants to non-profits in our community and around the world that are making an impact in the lives of children and families in need.  Back in the day, the Mavs games were fun to watch with the " Three J's " - but we didn't win a lot, and we never thought we would make it to the playoffs consistently, much less to the NBA Finals. ( Three J's: Jimmy Jackson, Jamal Mashburn, Jason Kidd - here's a funn...

The Masters, in all its beauty ~ Texas Rangers ~ Dallas Mavs ~ Get Outside

The Masters The ultimate Bucket List item and one of the ones that exceeded my expectations. If you play golf, have a family member who makes you watch golf or take naps to golf, you understand that The Masters is the holy grail of golf tournaments. It is the only PGA tournament that is played in the same location every year, Augusta, Georgia.  Thanks to very dear friends of mine, I had the chance to walk through the azaleas, experience the serenity of Amen Corner and watch the players skip golf balls across the water at Hole 16. If they allowed people to sleep on the grass, I would have stayed forever.  We were there for two days of practice rounds, which is fun because the players are relaxed and cut up with one another. They cancelled the Par 3 Contest, which was sad, but just being there was the most wonderful feeling ever. You can't take phones in, so I even called my parents from the phones at Augusta, just to do so. We also didn't realize you could bring in a real camer...

Week 13: Dallas Cowboys vs. Minnesota Vikings ~ NFC East ~ NFL logo quiz

GO COWBOYS!!! 10-1 1st in the NFL 1st in the NFC EAST Thursday, December 1st 7:25 PM CST on NBC We've NEVER won 10 consecutive games. Ever.  We lost our first game of the season to the New York Giants, by one point. And oddly enough, they are still the ghost we're trying to run away from and secure our playoff spot with only 5 Regular Season games left.  Here is what the NFC East looks like going into Week 13...  The Minnesota Vikings... what should we fear?  The Vikings are in the NFC North Division. They currently trail the Detroit Lions for a spot in the playoffs. They have only won 1 of their last 5 games, which makes this Thursday night, showtime game, a must win for the Vikings!  4-1 at home, The Vikings meet the Cowboys who are 5-0 on the road. Oh how I love those odds! Forever in our favor this season.  Quarterback situation. Sam Bradford is the starting QB for the Vikings. A guy they got in the o...
